Summary: Polymer-free controlled drug elution has proved challenging for surface-modified drug eluting stents. Drug-filled stents (DFS; Medtronic, Santa Rosa CA) however, are a novel platform for polymer-free drug delivery in which the drug is contained in a hollow stent and released through laser drilled holes along the abluminal surface of the stent. We hypothesized that hole-size can modulate in vivo drug release kinetics from DFS.
