Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions: Fracture in drug-eluting stents increases focal intimal hyperplasia in the atherosclerosed rabbit iliac artery

Conway C, Desany GJ, Bailey LR, Keating JH, Baker BL, Edelman ER. Fracture in drug-eluting stents increases focal intimal hyperplasia in the atherosclerosed rabbit iliac artery.

Summary: Controlled release of therapeutic agents, such as sirolimus and its analogs, or paclitaxel, has reduced tissue-based drug-eluting stent failure modes compared to bare metal stents. In the stent, restenosis is dramatically reduced and the implications of mechanical device failure are magnified. This controlled animal study, using intact and pre-eluted drug-eluting stents, provides data in support of the hypothesis that concomitance of drug and stent fracture leads to greater neointimal response.
