Nicola Parry, BSc, MSc, BVSc, DACVP, FRCVS, CBSET Director of Pathology Laboratory Operations. Lost in the Labyrinth: A Primer on Basic Cochlear Histology for Anatomic Pathologists.
Despite the vital roles of the inner ear in hearing and balance, basic inner ear histology remains a mystery to even many experienced pathologists, for a variety of reasons. Dr. Parry's image-based presentation focuses on the cochlea (part of the bony labyrinth) and the membranous components suspended within it, highlighting some key microscopic features for pathologists to recognize as they begin to learn more about this tissue, enabling pathologists in all professional settings to more confidently approach histopathologic examination of the inner ear, and thus to better interpret microscopic changes in this tissue.
